“I couldn’t fully understand that I was free”: a Ukrainian soldier showed a terrible photo before and after Russian captivity

A serviceman of the 56th separate motorized infantry brigade, Vladimir Tsema-Bursov, returned from captivity only a month ago. After the exchange, it turned out that the 41-year-old man had lost 38 kilograms. He is currently being treated in a clinic in the Poltava region.

Before the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, Vladimir weighed 95 kg, writes the magazine Svoi.City . In April 2022, he was captured, where he remained for 20 months.

Now his weight is only 57 kilograms. “I have a whole bunch of diseases, including chronic gastritis in the acute stage, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic prostatitis in remission, etc.,” says Vladimir.

The man is an orchestra artist, played in groups, orchestras, in the Mariupol Chamber Philharmonic; worked on cruise ships.

In April 2022, while trying to get out of Mariupol, Vladimir was captured by the Russians. He and other soldiers of the 56th Motorized Infantry Brigade were sent through Sartana to the notorious Yelenovka colony.

“We are met by a “turner”, each of us calls his last name, first name and patronymic and runs into the barracks along the “living corridor”. There are three on the left, the same number on the right. Each of them has “tools of labor” in their hands: someone has a baton or a rubber stick, others have something like a cutting board or a strap with metal inserts. Each of them hits you, whatever it hits. And at the end you meet the last “spinner.” He jumps up and kicks you in the stomach. He hit you so hard that almost everyone fell off their feet,” says Vladimir.

That evening alone, about 900 people were brought to Yelenovka, although the colony was not designed for such a large number of people. “We slept tightly pressed against each other, we couldn’t even see the floor. If they had more or less established food, then there was a big problem with water. They brought some from somewhere, but they told us that Ukraine had cut off the water supply, so now you’re sitting without water,” recalls the former prisoner.

Vladimir talks about constant interrogations and bullying in Elenovka. However, he was not there for long; in April he was transferred to a prison in the Russian Federation. “The wartime songs “Rise up, huge country”, “Victory Day”, “Dark Night” and, of course, the anthem of the Russian Federation sounded from the speakers. None of us knew then that we would listen to these songs every day for 20 months And again constant beatings,” recalls the Ukrainian.

“At that moment it seemed to me that this was not happening to me. I just couldn’t fully understand that I was free. Then someone got on the bus and asked us to get off,” this is how Vladimir told his impressions of the exchange.

As OBOZ.UA reported , on February 8, Ukraine returned another 100 defenders from Russian captivity . The lists of those who finally returned include border guards, national guardsmen and military personnel of the Armed Forces, defenders of Mariupol.

And on January 31, the 50th prisoner exchange took place. 207 Ukrainians returned home , among whom were defenders of Mariupol and Azovstal, Kherson, and Snake Island.

  1. I can’t recall seeing American POWs released from Nazi camps looking like this.
This is the type of criminal regime that Washington is currently letting win by its deplorable political antics. I’m very deeply disgusted by those crooks in our capital city.

    • Generally speaking, the behaviour of the Wehrmacht, who mainly oversaw the treatment of allied POW’s in WW2, was just about acceptable. If you were locked up by them, you had a decent chance of eventually coming out of it ok. My grandad knew a guy in civvy street who previously as a British officer ended up in Colditz. It was a grim and terrible experience, but he was generally treated like an officer, never tortured and never interrogated.
There were atrocities committed; some terrible, but compared to what Ukrainians have suffered in the captivity of putinaZi scum, it was mild.
Putler and his murder gang have brought to the world a level of savagery hardly seen since Ivan the Terrible. The atrocities of the Holocaust are the only analogue.
As Diane Francis says “the leadership of Russia is cancerous.”
      RuZZia must die.
There was a post recently on LinkedIn from a guy who had just got his friend’s body back from RuZZian-held territory. He had been beheaded and castrated. His name was Vladimir. I can’t remember the family name or the name of the poster, but will try to locate it.

I don’t think anyone; even most Ukrainians, expected such an orgy of savagery and evil from the putinaZis.

      • Yeah, that’s like a picture of a concentration camp inmate, indeed. Only thing that’s missing is the tattooed number on the arm. What the RuSSians are doing is obvious: Starve Ukrainians to death.

    • Right, Mr. Ofp, allied soldiers (in the Nazi’s view, misguided Aryans) and even Russian POWs (who did provide valuable labor to the war economy) were treated better than this. This is how Jewish prisoners in concentration camps were treated, starved to death! So, the picture of Tsema-Bursov after release is further evidence that Russia really pursuits a genocide of Ukrainian people. This should be shown in all western media!

      • Speaking of which, I wonder why so little of these sorts of atrocities are to be seen on Western media.
