Ukraine converted $55,000 recreational SkyRanger ultralights, the kind of hobby kit-plane you’d find at a weekend flying club, into a functioning bomber squadron. Ten aircraft, each carrying a Soviet-era 100kg ordinance, had already flown a joint strike near occupied Crimea’s Perekop Isthmus months before the picture was even published.
Russia’s entire air defense doctrine is built to catch missiles and military drones. It was never built to catch a Sunday flying club.
