Russia committed a grave war crime against global cultural heritage by launching a targeted strike that ignited a massive fire at the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Ukrainian officials and church leaders said on June 15.

The overnight assault on the sanctuary — which holds three international statuses, including a UNESCO World Heritage site in Danger and a protected cultural property under the Hague Convention — marks one of the most devastating attacks on Ukraine’s history.

Metropolitan Epifaniy, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), condemned the strike, calling it “another Russian crime against humanity, against history, against Christianity.”

He urged the global community to stop the “Kremlin antichrist.”

As firefighters battled the flames on the cathedral’s roof at dawn, a miraculous rain began to fall over Kyiv. Meanwhile, monks and rescuers scrambled to evacuate ancient icons, relics, and liturgical items of immense national value.

“Thanks to the coordinated actions of the Lavra brethren and the selfless work of rescuers, we managed to minimize the threat to people and save the shrines,” said Bishop Avraamiy, the Lavra’s acting vicar.

A millennium of faith and culture

Founded in 1051 as a cave monastery on the slopes of the Dnipro River, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra has stood as the beating heart of Eastern European Orthodox Christianity for nearly a thousand years. The Dormition Cathedral, its first stone structure, was built in 1073.

The monastery quickly became a powerhouse of education and art. It was home to renowned chroniclers like Nestor, author of the Tale of Bygone Years. In the 17th century, Archimandrite Petro Mohyla founded the Lavra school, which later evolved into the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy — one of Eastern Europe’s most prominent educational centers.

The long shadow of Moscow

While the Lavra survived Mongol hordes and Tatar raids, its darkest chapters are inextricably linked to Moscow’s control:

  • 1686 annexation: The Russian state illegally absorbed the Kyiv Metropolis, stripping the Ukrainian church of its autonomy (a move the Ecumenical Patriarchate finally reversed in 2019).
  • 1786 confiscation: The Russian Empire seized the monastery’s vast wealth, lands, and enterprises, transferring them to the imperial treasury.
  • Soviet terror: In 1918, Bolsheviks tortured and executed Metropolitan Volodymyr. By 1929, the Lavra was turned into a Soviet “anti-religious museum.”
  • 1941 demolition: Retreating Soviet troops blew up the Dormition Cathedral, a crime Soviet propaganda falsely blamed on the Nazis.

Breaking the UOC-MP’s grip

The cathedral was finally rebuilt and consecrated in 2000, but the Lavra remained under the control of the Moscow-affiliated Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP). Led by Metropolitan Pavlo (notoriously dubbed Pasha “Mercedes” for his lavish lifestyle), the UOC-MP systematically expanded its grip over the complex.

That era began to crumble in late 2022. Widespread Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) raids uncovered anti-Ukrainian literature and Russian propaganda within the Lavra’s walls. Later, Ukraine refused to renew the UOC-MP’s lease on the Dormition and Trapeznaya churches, allowing the independent OCU to hold a historic Christmas service there in January 2023. By August 2024, Ukraine’s parliament passed a law outright banning Russian-affiliated religious organizations.

Targeted destruction

The Russian war machine had already scarred the Lavra earlier this year.

On Jan. 24, 2026, a massive Russian strike damaged the entrance to the Far Caves — the first time the complex suffered direct war damage since WWII.

However, the June 15 strike using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones was a calculated, devastating blow to the main cathedral.

“When Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is under attack, it is not just about Ukraine. It is about the heritage of all humanity,” emphasized Tetiana Berezhna, Minister of Culture and Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy, urging the world to drastically increase pressure on Russia.

  1. The world stays silent. Where are those Christians in the world condemning this act of cultural genocide. Why is there no outcry from the MAGA republicans that keep preaching Christian values?

    • Because the maga cult has no Christian values. They worship an orange devil, and orange devils are not Christian.
