On Monday, July 29, the main Russian bank that financially supports the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine became the target of Ukrainian hackers , who have been carrying out the largest DDOS attack against the Russian Internet infrastructure for almost a week.

As UNIAN was informed by sources in Ukrainian intelligence, since approximately 11:00 local time, the Bank of Russia’s resources have been operating either with significant interruptions or are completely unavailable to users. The financial institution itself acknowledges the fact of a cyberattack and notes that the intensity of the attack is growing.

It is worth understanding that the Central Bank of the Russian Federation (Bank of Russia) is the main first-tier bank, the main issuing, monetary and credit institution of the Russian Federation, which develops and implements, in cooperation with the government of Russia, a unified state credit policy and is vested with special powers, in particular, the right to issue banknotes and regulate the activities of banks.

“In addition, Russian users cannot use the online services of Zenit Bank and Gazprombank. The situation is complicated by the lack of a stable Internet connection, since the largest telecommunications providers in the Russian Federation are also subject to systematic cyber attacks. In particular, an attack is being carried out on the MTS provider, whose users have not been able to fully use the services for three days now,” the agency’s source said.

Special operations of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense

As UNIAN reported, a massive cyberattack by specialists from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense on the banking system of the aggressor state Russia began on the morning of July 23. As a result of the attack, the operation of payment systems, mobile banking applications, personal accounts, the system for paying for public transport services, etc., ceased or became significantly more difficult.

After the defeat of online services of leading Russian banks, Internet providers, social networks and national payment systems, ATMs were also attacked . In addition, Ukrainian intelligence managed to gain access to the databases of Russian financial institutions.
