Ahead of Hungary’s parliamentary elections, Russia has mobilized all its propaganda and disinformation resources to help current Prime Minister Viktor Orban, according to an investigation by The Insider .

According to the publication, after the liquidation of the founder of the Concord company and the private military company Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Russian disinformation department came under the control of the first deputy head of the Russian President’s administration, Sergei Kiriyenko. The main contractor is the Struktura company of the Russian political strategist Ilya Gambashidze.

Journalists found out that the “Matryoshka” bot network is actively operating in Hungary, which, on behalf of well-known publications such as DW, Euronews, and Kyiv Independent, spreads fake news about attempts on Orban and “aggression” from Ukraine.

Russia is also distributing a huge number of videos generated by artificial intelligence on social networks, in which the residents of Hungary are frightened by “mobilization for war for Ukraine” in the event of the victory of the opposition party “Tisa” and its leader Peter Magyar.

In addition, according to the publication, the Russians are trying to discredit Orban’s critics. In particular, a campaign of false accusations was launched against anti-Soviet dissident Gábor Ivanyi, which was spread through specially created one-day websites.

The journalists reported that the operations in Budapest are being led by GRU officers under diplomatic cover, including naval attaché Alexei Zarudnev. Russian diplomats are also giving Hungarian journalists advice on how to convince voters that they should vote for Orban. The publication added that one of the key relayers of Russian narratives in Hungary is Hungarian propagandist Georg Špettle.

Opposition ahead of Orban’s party in voter groups

Earlier, the newspaper Nepszava wrote that the latest polls ahead of the parliamentary elections in Hungary show that the opposition Tisza party of Peter Magyar is ahead of the Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban by 9, 11 and 13 percentage points in various categories.

According to polls, among voters who will definitely vote, the opposition party leads by a score of 52-39.
