Graham’s Russia sanctions bill receives sufficient support in US Senate – Axios

The bill currently has at least 61 co-authors.

The Russian sanctions bill , proposed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, already has more than 60 co-sponsors, which is enough for it to pass the Senate, Axios reports .

“The bill, which would impose 100 percent secondary tariffs on countries that continue to buy Russian oil and gas, currently appears to have enough votes to pass the Senate. The biggest remaining hurdle is getting time for consideration in the Senate. The updated bill, which Senator Richard Blumenthal (Democrat of Connecticut) is pushing through the Senate, will still need approval from the House of Representatives,” the journalists recalled.

According to the publication’s interlocutor, the bill currently has at least 61 co-authors, including 39 Republicans and 22 Democrats.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump did not dare to fully support this bill, but made it clear that he was ready to sign it in Graham’s honor.

“We are seriously thinking about this – it’s in honor of Lindsey. He wanted this more than anything in the world,” the American leader said.

As Axios adds, such a bill would increase pressure on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin by allowing the president to impose 100 percent tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and gas.

“Secondary sanctions will be aimed at countries such as China and India, with the aim of cutting off the revenues that help finance Russia’s war in Ukraine,” the publication writes.

In addition, the bill is aimed at the Russian “shadow fleet” – a network of tankers used to circumvent Western sanctions when exporting Russian oil.

  1. “We are seriously thinking about this – it’s in honor of Lindsey. He wanted this more than anything in the world,”

Had you signed these sanctions 18 months ago, this war might be over by now.

  2. This report is misleading. “The bill, which would impose 100 percent secondary tariffs on countries that continue to buy Russian oil and gas…” That’s not accurate. The original version, yes, but it was 500%. Then dick-tater trump ordered Lindsey to rewrite it to grant all this power, the choice to impose such sanctions or not, solely to the president, and water it down from 500% to 100%. The difference in these percentages might be meaningless in practice, but 500% is symbolic. It’s all a waste of time and effort however, because trump will never, never in a million years, do anything that could be remotely perceived as harmful to his lover putin. No matter how many times this administration brags about “peace through strength”, in reality it’s weakness through capitulation and a disgusting disgrace.

    • I’m afraid that you are 100% right, Mr. Duck. You can’t expect a depraved gangster like Trump to have a backbone, when it comes to his boss and lover in the kremlin. Maybe a boner, but not a backbone.
