Republican Party leaders have removed it from the list of bills to be put to a vote this week.

Less than a month ago, the Senate voted to honor the memory of the late Senator Lindsey Graham and pass his proposed bill, which seeks to impose sanctions on Russia’s trading partners. However, as Politico reports , the bill is now in serious danger of being stuck in the House of Representatives, where it faces significant resistance from Democrats, a lack of enthusiasm from Republicans, and a fading momentum to honor the late South Carolina senator.

It is noted that Republican Party leaders have excluded it from the list of bills to be put to a vote this week.

“We just got back from the committee chairs meeting, and no one mentioned this,” House Rules Committee Chair Virginia Fox (R-North Carolina) said in an interview.

When asked if the bill could pass through her committee on its way to the House floor, she replied:

“I have no idea. Nobody talks about it.”

At the same time, Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged that a tough fight lies ahead, but did not answer whether the bill would go to the House of Representatives after the Senate passed it by a vote of 86 to 11. 

“We’ll see. We’ve always consistently taken a tough stance on Russia. So we’ll see what happens next,” he said.

In turn, several Republicans are warning that the House of Representatives should complete the sanctions bill before going home for the election campaign. 

“I think it’s very important to pass the sanctions bill. Not to do so is a failure,” said Congressman Don Bacon (R-Nebraska), a hardline defense advocate who is resigning from the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, Representative Brad Schneider of Illinois, leader of the centrist “Coalition of New Democrats,” opposes the sanctions bill and stated: 

“I am against granting the executive branch additional powers that were rightfully attributed to the legislative branch a long time ago.”

Congresswoman Catherine Clark of Massachusetts, the second-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, also added: 

“We will look and assess the situation if the bill comes before the House. But there is a great concern about giving this president, who continues to raise the costs of working Americans through tariffs, even more authority to do this.”
