Global Internet cables cut in Red Sea

This could be the reason for today’s global failure of the world’s largest social networks, providers and services.

Four of the 15 undersea telecommunications cables connecting Europe, Asia and Africa and supporting the global Internet and telecommunications were broken in the Red Sea.

These are the Asia-Africa-Europe 1, Europe India Gateway, Seacom and TGN lines, which account for 25% of traffic in the region, said HGC Global Communications Limited (Hong Kong).

“About 15% of traffic from Asia heads west, while 80% of this traffic travels through these submarine cables in the Red Sea,” HGC said in a statement.

The company indicated that it is already taking measures to mitigate the consequences, in particular, diversifying to reroute routes affected by the problem. These include the direction to the north (Hong Kong – mainland China – Europe) and the direction to the east (Hong Kong – USA – Europe). As for the westward direction, the company is diversifying traffic within a system of unaffected 11 cables in the Red Sea.

“Initial analysis has shown that the damaged cable segments are located in the southern Red Sea, falling under the jurisdiction of Yemen,” HGC said.

In turn, the Houthis, who previously systematically attacked ships in the Red Sea, deny their involvement in the incident and blame Britain and the United States.

    • Got Starlink? Or still depending on cables connecting mobile hotspots with the internet? 🤨

      • Deutsche Telekom does not use cables for mobile internet as far as i’m informed. My internet is fine. 😁

          • Okay. Still my internet was fine during the day. Yeah, Germany always passes the finish line last. I hope i won’t lose my job because of Putin’s ex-GDR puppet Weselsky now threatening with ‘Wellenstreiks’, meaning i get up and dressed and at the train station they will surprise me with a wonderful ‘Heute leider nicht’. 🤒

            • Yup, another problem hurting German economy recently. I’m generally for strong unions and the right to strike, but unscrupulous blackmailers like Weselsky make me think twice. 😠

                • Oh, they do, but very rarely. The GDL, strongarming Deutsche Bahn, is really extreme. Life ain’t fair, Jimmy Hoffa’s being missing since decades, but Weselsky still can roam freely. 👿

            • When I lived in Germany, we called the phone system “Hitler’s Revenge.” The Germans didn’t care for the label, once they heard it, but we didn’t care. It was a phone system straight from the 3rd world.

That went well into the 80s. I don’t know if they got better after reunion or not.

      • I’m concerned that both Russia and China would like to cut all internet connections with the West, to “safeguard” their people from the “dangers” of the WWW. 😕

        • China wouldn’t, they do too much business with the West. Companies like AliXpress would disappear overnight.

          • Hmm, good point, Foccusser. But on the other hand, where was this concern about the economy in 2020, when the Xi regime forced Alibaba’s founder Jack Ma into “retirement”? 🤔

  1. I don’t see any reason why the Middle East would need internet.
I wouldn’t mind to cut it off.
