Germany may get rid of Russian oil before the end of the year – Scholz

Germany may stop importing Russian oil before the end of the year, and gas – in 2024.

This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a press conference in London with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, European Pravda reports with reference to Reuters.

Asked by a journalist if Scholz is ashamed that the EU countries are paying Russia billions of euros for fossil fuels, he said that the country is working on its energy independence and “we think we can do it within this year.”

Russian oil now accounts for 25% of German imports, down from 35% at the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, and gas imports have dropped to 40% from 55%. Imports of Russian coal fell to 25% from 50% before the invasion.

The country wants to reduce the share of Russian gas to 24% by summer, but it may take longer to get rid of its dependence, they say in Germany – by the summer of 2024. “We are actively working to become independent of the need to import gas from Russia,” Scholz said.

“As you can imagine, it’s not that easy because it requires infrastructure that needs to be built first. Therefore, pipelines to the north coast of Germany, regasification ports, allowing, for example, LNG ships to transfer their gas reserves. network in Germany,” he explains the billion-dollar financing of the aggressor country by the European Union through energy imports.

The economics institute DIW said in a study released Friday that Germany could possibly be able to secure enough gas for the coming winter without any imports from Russia through a combination of alternative suppliers and drastic energy conservation measures.

  1. Scholz was also going to send tanks to Ukraine, but that didn’t happen so why should we believe him now?

    • Yeah, after months of maintenance because the Germans didn’t keep them up. They were just archival remnants for the Germans. I thought it was an insult.
