German elections: Merz declares victory, Scholz congratulates him. First results

02/23/2025

On February 23, Germany held early elections for the Bundestag . Exit polls indicate a victory for the conservative Christian Democratic Union , whose leader Friedrich Merz – likely the next Chancellor of Germany – has already declared his victory.

Current Prime Minister Olaf Scholz has conceded defeat, with his center-left Social Democratic Party of Germany likely to come in third. The far-right Alternative for Germany party came in second , its best performance in its history, according to opinion polls conducted by German broadcasters ARD and ZDF.

At 18:00 local time (19:00 Kyiv time), polling stations across the country closed and vote counting began. Exit polls as of 20:00 and 19:55 (local time) are as follows:

– Christian Democratic Union CDU/CSU led by Friedrich Merz – 28.9% (ARD poll) / 28.4% (ZDF poll);

– Alternative for Germany (AfD) led by Alice Weidel – 19.9% / 20.1% ;

– Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) of current Chancellor Olaf Scholz – 16.2% / 16.3% ;

– Green Party led by former Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck – 13% / 12.4% ;

– “Left” – 8.5% / 8.8% ;

– Free Democratic Party of Germany (FDP) – 4.9% / 5% ;

– Union of Sarah Wagenknecht (SSV) – 4.8% / 5% .

Other candidates received less than 5% (in total, 29 political parties participated in the early elections in Germany, 10 of them in all 16 federal states).

According to exit polls, voter turnout was 84%, the highest since 1990 .

Another record of these elections is related to the results of the Social Democratic Party. The political force led by Chancellor Scholz reached a historic low of support , showing the worst result for the SPD in 135 years.

The head of government called it “a bitter election result for the Social Democratic Party” on Sunday evening at the Willy Brandt House in Berlin. According to Scholz, this must be “stated clearly and unequivocally,” Bild reports .

The chancellor congratulated Merz on his victory. Meanwhile, SPD co-chair Saskia Esken thanked Scholz for his efforts in the election campaign. “You fought like a lion,” she told the leader of the political force on stage at the SPD’s federal headquarters.

“We – the CDU and the CSU – won these federal elections. Thank you for the trust you have placed in us and in me. And in this context, I would like to express my respect to our political competitors.

“Now we will quickly carry out our government’s instructions, because the world will not wait. It also does not wait for lengthy coalition negotiations and discussions. Now we must regain the ability to act as quickly as possible,” Merz reacted to the previous results.

As OBOZ.UA previously wrote, Friedrich Merz actively supports Ukraine and even advocates for our country’s membership in NATO. The politician also promised that if elected, a just end to the war and support for Kyiv would be among his strategic priorities.

  1. Churchill – Democracy is the worst form of government, except all the others.

    Merz and the CDU/CSU has won, as predicted. However, Germany will have another coalition government. The last one under Scholz was also a coalition government, and coalitions are notoriously difficult.
    Why is democracy the worst except all the others? Because, instead of the Germans voting for the most likely party to win, they’ve disbursed their votes among lots of other parties, many of which are not shown on the graphs. I know, that’s not what democracy is about, but the country has many problems to tackle, and the CDU would’ve been best suited for solving most of those issues. Now, the Germans will have to live with yet another anemic government. They have fucked up, in other words.
    Let’s hope that Merz can create a coalition that can at least get more things done than Scholz’s.

    • I suppose that this is the most likely thing to happen. Merz has already vowed not to work together with the Nazis.

  2. The White House assures that the United States of America is already “very close” to reaching a peace agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

    All Putin demands were included……………………….
