At this momentous time, we are all reminded that it was a group of Afghan goat herders (with Stinger missiles) who managed to do the impossible, and to eject the might of the Soviet war machine from their country.
The Soviet withdrawal was completed on February 15, 1989, and Afghanistan returned to nonaligned status after this.
And here we are, some 30 years later, with the Russian military being systematically demolished and taken apart, tank by tank, soldier by soldier, at an equally enormous cost to Ukraine, by a nation that has found its place, its identity, and its strength.
Ukraine may have been somewhat divided previously, but with every day that now passes, it becomes stronger in its resolve, and in its desire to deal with this army of savages that crossed into its borders 232 days ago.
Putin has achieved what many others have tried and failed to do. He has united NATO, enlarged its membership and given the nation of Ukraine a common purpose.
What a spectacular legacy of failure the Russian president will be leaving behind to the next generation of Russians.
And to those on this page who continue to make excuses for the bombing of civilian apartment buildings, and the murder of Ukrainian women and children, know this. An army of slaves can never prevail against an army of free people. They’ll score the occasional battlefield victory, but the outcome is always the same
