Following a foiled bombing attempt at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the German government is apparently preparing a far-reaching response. New sanctions against Russia and additional arms deliveries to Ukraine are under consideration.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz is apparently preparing a comprehensive package of measures against Russia.
The background to this is an attempted attack with an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August. According to information from “Welt am Sonntag” and “Politico,” the German government is reportedly working on a series of measures.
Germany could also push for new EU sanctions in addition to its own measures.
Suspicion against Russia
The German government has not yet publicly confirmed that Russia is behind the incident. A government spokesperson stated on Saturday that they do not participate in speculation. The decisive factor, they said, will be the official attribution after the conclusion and evaluation of the investigation.
On August 4, a drone equipped with explosives was discovered in the airport’s security area. Another drone is believed to have collided with a DHL cargo plane. Later, a third drone, suspected to be carrying military-grade explosives, was also found. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is currently investigating a potential serious attack on Germany’s transport and logistics infrastructure.
Merz had recently announced that the federal government would comment “shortly” on the findings regarding the perpetrators and that those responsible would “pay” for their actions.
“Turning Point 2.0”?
In Berlin, there is already talk of a possible “turning point 2.0”, which would represent a significant tightening of Germany’s approach towards Moscow.
In parallel, Brussels is already working on a new sanctions package. According to media reports, sanctions against numerous additional individuals and companies are being considered. The discussion about how to handle frozen Russian state assets is also back on the table.
However, it remains unclear which measures will actually be decided upon. Likewise, the official attribution of the attack is still pending.

I will set one thing straight right up front: I expect additional weak sanctions from this and nothing more.
Germany–and everyone else in Europe–should not be so shocked and surprised that the mafia state is going through such lengths to wage this hybrid war on them. Not weeks, months, or even years, but decades of utter weakness from leaders with flacid backbones only encouraged such behavior from the world’s largest and worst terrorist organization, centered in the kremlin. And as long as no spine is grown, it will not only continue, attacks and sabotage against Germany and the rest of the West will get even worse and more numerous.
