Some European Union countries do not support the appointment of Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas to the post of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Politico reported on March 4, citing sources.
The bloc has been debating for several months the possibility that the Estonian premier could replace the current head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.
A number of senior European officials expect that her candidacy will be supported by French President Emmanuel Macron.
However, “not everyone is convinced [Kallas] has a chance.”
An anonymous EU official said that the idea of appointing Kallas as the EU’s top diplomat “remains sensitive” in some countries.
“I don’t see France and Germany agreeing to that, because of the same reasons she was not an option for the NATO job,” said an unnamed EU official. “Are we really putting someone who likes to eat Russians for breakfast in this position?”
Kallas said on Nov. 15, 2023, that she was interested in the post of NATO Secretary General, which could become vacant in October 2024.
At the same time, Politico noted that Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is the favorite for the post of NATO chief. He himself declared his interest in the post in late October.
Latvian Foreign Minister Krišjānis Kariņš announced on Nov. 19 his readiness to run for the post.

“Are we really putting someone who likes to eat Russians for breakfast in this position?”
Nope, they will put someone in place like the former EU High Representative, pro russian Mogherini, or the worse than useless Borrell. I assume these anonymous sources are probably pro russian scumbags, but it would be a breath of fresh air if the EU actually appoint someone totally suited for the job.
Borrell is quite solid, I have no complaints about him.
It is not a very powerful post, but he is saying the right things.

“Some European Union countries do not support the appointment of Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas”
There’s always some EU countries that complain about something. No big deal, sames as in the US with its even more member states. At least, no civil war in the EU yet. 🙄
There is always some pro russian sources too, that wouldn’t want the likes of Kallas telling a few home truths about russia.
So true, Focusser. 😎
