EU acknowledges its inability to detect UAVs. It will take at least year to create detection system

The European Union will need at least a year to create a system for detecting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The creation of such a system in Europe was discussed after the drone incident in Poland.

European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius said this in an interview with Euractiv.

He admitted that the EU currently has no ability to detect drones. Existing air defense systems are capable of detecting fighters or missiles, but not drones.

“Drones have their own characteristics – they fly very low, they are small,” Kubilius said.

According to him, there are several options for increasing the European Union’s capabilities in the fight against drones. The first step is to promptly purchase UAV detection systems, which he believes is quite possible.

He noted the experience of Ukraine, where the military uses hundreds of sensors that capture the sound of drone engines. Such a system allows you to detect the approach of UAVs that cannot be detected by air defense radars.

Another option is lasers. With their help, drones can be shot down with minimal costs. At the same time, such a defense network should also cover the bloc’s large maritime borders, given the invasion of drones in Norway and Denmark last Monday, September 22.

Kubilius emphasized that the creation of a detection system will take about a year. However, the development of a system capable of not only tracking, but also destroying drones will take much longer.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on September 22, several airports in Norway and Denmark stopped working due to unknown drones that flew into the airspace of both countries.

As we will recall, on September 18, a fragment of a russian Gerbera UAV was discovered in the far west of Latvia. Such drones are actively used by the army of the aggressor country, the russian federation, during air attacks on Ukraine.

We also wrote that on the night of September 9-10, several dozen UAVs flew into Polish airspace. These were russian drones launched during an airstrike on Ukraine.
