Republican Don Bacon (R-Nebraska) on Tuesday slammed the Trump administration’s suggestion that the U.S. could take over Greenland by military force, calling the notion “appalling.”
“I hope Republicans stand up against this, universally oppose, and give the feedback to the president, because this is appalling,” Bacon told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead.”
“Greenland is a NATO ally. We have a base on Greenland. We could put four or five bases on Greenland,” the Nebraska Republican, who is retiring at the end of the term, continued. “They would — they wouldn’t mind that. They would make agreements with us on mining. Denmark is one of our best friends.”
He added, “They had more people per capita die in Afghanistan and Iraq fighting for us in Iraq and Afghanistan, so they’re a proven ally.”
President Trump’s plans to acquire Greenland were revived this week after the U.S. launched a military operation over the weekend in Venezuela and captured its President Nicolás Maduro. The embattled leader and his wife were indicted on narco-terrorism charges.
The move emboldened the Trump administration to flex its power, with Trump mulling similar actions in Mexico, Cuba and Colombia.
Trump has often argued that acquiring Greenland, which has many mineral resources and a strategic location, could boost U.S. national security.
The White House on Tuesday said that Trump is considering using military action to obtain the Arctic island, which is a Danish territory.
“President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region,” Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said in a statement.
Bacon also recently pushed back on White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller’s comments around potential military force.
On Wednesday, European Parliament member Anders Vistisen said Denmark’s government was “quite fed up” with Trump’s rhetoric around the island.
The president has also previously expressed interest in annexing Canada as part of the U.S. and retaking control of the Panama Canal.

Yes and tiny Georgia and Ukraine also committed troops to those wars to assist the US. They are never credited for that.
I well remember in 2008 during putler’s savage invasion and annexation of 20% of Georgia, the sad spectacle of Georgia’s troops flying back to help Saakashvili in his hour of need.

Trump never had any respect for my friend John McCain. So why would this asshole have any respect for Denmark, Ukraine or Georgia? I hope more in Congress will raise their voice to stop Trump’s criminal bullshit.
I’m sure John would have been an excellent president. He was hated by Krasnov for two reasons :
1/ he was a man of integrity
2/ he was pro-Ukraine
Based on the many comments I read in 2014, IMHO, he would have reacted strongly to the theft of Crimea. His options were many : he could have relocated a couple of divisions of US troops from Germany to Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts. Being an airman, he could have commenced patrols over those oblasts.
The orders would have been not to engage unless attacked. It would have been a powerful deterrent on putler’s next plans.
Like Dubya before him, I think he would have requested and got UK ground forces and air support.
Then serious sanctions could have commenced and so many innocent lives saved.
What a tragedy.
The thought of us going against one of our allies and close friends is more than appalling; it’s treasonous and disgusting.
