At least ten dead dolphins have been found along the coastal area of Krasnodar Krai after an oil spill caused by the collision of two Russian tankers, according to the Delfa Dolphin Rescue Center.
The cause of death for the Azov dolphins is believed to be acute poisoning from fuel oil vapors, fish poisoning, or contaminated water.
The first dead dolphin, discovered following the spill, was reported by volunteers on Dec. 18. On Dec. 22, eight more dead dolphins—six on the shore and two in the water—were found near Novorossiysk.
Environmentalists said this event now qualifies as a mass die-off.
“Such cases are quite rare in the coastal area of Krasnodar Krai. This is an extremely alarming situation,” the Dolphin Rescue Center said.
From Dec. 15 to Dec. 22, Delfa documented 10 dead dolphins.
A state of emergency has been declared in four villages of the Temryuk district and on the Blagoveshchenskaya beach.
Russian tanker collision near Kerch Strait
On Dec. 15, two Russian tankers, Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239, loaded with petroleum products, collided in the Kerch Strait.
After the accident, satellites detected a 100-square-kilometer oil slick near the Russian city of Anapa.
Greenpeace Ukraine reported that up to 4,300 tons of fuel oil and possibly other petroleum products could spill into the waters of the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black and Azov Seas.
“If such a large amount of oil ends up in the sea, this will be one of the largest man-made disasters in the Black Sea,” environmentalists warned.
On Dec. 17, residents of Krasnodar Krai began sharing images of beaches blackened by fuel oil and dead birds.
The governor of Krasnodar Krai confirmed that the oil spill from the Volgoneft tankers had contaminated “several dozen kilometers” of the coastline.
