Despite the war and evacuation from Mariupol: Metinvest Polytechnic University held its first-ever bachelor’s graduation

Ukraine’s first private mining and metallurgical university, Metinvest Polytechnic, founded on the initiative of Rinat Akhmetov, held a historic bachelor’s graduation. Over 100 students successfully completed four years of study and received diplomas – despite the fact that the university had to completely restructure its work after the start of a full-scale war and the loss of its campus in Mariupol.

Six years ago, Metinvest Group launched a project to create a modern European-style technical university to train a new generation of engineers. In 2021, construction of a student campus with an academic building, dormitory, and sports complex began in the center of Mariupol. However, the full-scale Russian invasion destroyed these plans.

Despite this, the university managed to retain its teaching staff, adapt educational programs, and conduct the first intake of students in the fall of 2022. The educational process was organized in a blended format, and practical training took place at Metinvest enterprises.

Today, Metinvest Polytechnic operates in Zaporizhia, Kryvyi Rih, and Kamiansky. During this time, the university has formed a full cycle of technical education – from a professional junior bachelor’s degree to postgraduate studies, and all educational programs have received state accreditation. Currently, the university has 1,335 students, including more than 50 war veterans.

The first bachelors received education in metallurgy, mining, automation, computer science, and occupational safety. Many are already working at Metinvest enterprises, and most plan to continue their studies in master’s degrees.

“The university that failed to be built in Mariupol has become a symbol of the sustainability of Ukrainian technical education. Metinvest Polytechnic graduates are the future engineering elite of Ukraine, which will play a decisive role in rebuilding industry and the economy as a whole. We are waiting for each of them at our enterprises to build a new Ukrainian metallurgy together,” said Tetyana Petruk, Director of Sustainable Development and Interaction with Personnel at Metinvest.

We would like to remind you that Metinvest Polytechnic University is currently accepting applications for a bachelor’s degree: until August 1, applicants can submit documents via their online account and choose one of 17 educational programs. The training combines theoretical training with practical work, and for veterans and certain categories of internally displaced persons, a simplified admission procedure based on an interview is provided.
