The Security Service of Ukraine announced the exposure of contacts between the deputy commander of the Russian volunteer corps of the International Legion of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and Russian special services.

“As part of its systematic counter-sabotage work, the SBU worked to prevent the assassination, which was planned on the orders of the FSB of the Russian Federation on the Independence Day of our state. The Security Service of Ukraine received relevant information in an operational manner.

In particular, the contacts of the deputy commander of the Russian volunteer corps of the International Legion of the GUR of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with the Russian special services were revealed. The specified person was supposed to prepare an assassination attempt against one of the leaders of the Russian opposition movement, who was supposed to arrive in Ukraine at that time,” the message says.

According to the SBU, as part of communication with representatives of the Russian special services, this soldier received an assignment to eliminate other military personnel of the Defense Forces of Ukraine in exchange for a monetary reward.

“Thanks to the SBU’s proactive work, the preparation of the crime was stopped in time. Subsequently, a complex of counterintelligence verification measures was carried out with the participation of the specified serviceman.

At the same time, this person admitted the fact of contacts with the FSB of the Russian Federation and provided the SBU with relevant information. This allowed the Ukrainian special service to establish the entire chain of those involved in the planned crime.

The Security Service documented his correspondence with the FSB representative on the person involved’s phone,” the Security Service said.

At the same time, they stated that given the soldier’s admission of contacts with the Russian FSB and cooperation with the investigation, no preventive measure was applied to him.

“While SBU officers were conducting urgent investigative actions to collect and record evidence of the specified criminal offense, an absolutely unacceptable conflict situation arose, which led to shooting.

This definitely should not have happened,” they added.
