Democrats scored a stunning upset on Saturday in a special election runoff for Texas Senate, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ, giving the party a major boost ahead of the November midterms.

Fort Worth Democrat Taylor Rehmet, a machinist and Air Force veteran, defeated Southlake Republican Leigh Wambsganss to fill the vacant state Senate District 9.

The district favored President Trump — who endorsed Wambsganss earlier on Saturday — by 17 points in 2024. The race went to a runoff after none of the candidates were able to clinch a majority in the November election.

Rehmet’s overperformance in the fall stoked concerns for the GOP, and a number of prominent party leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott (R), intervened in the race in an effort to boost Wambsganss.

“When a grassroots union organizer like Taylor Rehmet overperforms by almost 20 points and forces a runoff, it couldn’t be any clearer that voters are tired of Republican bullshit,” Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder said in a statement after the November race.

Rehmet’s victory is sure to fuel Democratic optimism heading into the midterms, where the party is hoping to flip the House and potentially even the Senate amid growing anxiety over the economy and anger over Trump’s immigration policies.

The seat opened up after Republican state Sen. Kelly Hancock was tapped as acting state comptroller.

  1. This is yet another reminder about what is likely to happen in the upcoming midterms in November. The people are sick and tired of corruption, government-sponsored terrorism on our streets, a bad economy, a pro-mafia POTUS, incompetent and criminal administration officials, and the cover-up of murders. Oh, and that the Epstein files still haven’t been released.
And, regardless of what Red might say, this is relevant to Ukraine. Getting rid of maga is releveant for everyone who loves freedom and democracy.

  2. One state senate race does not make an easy path for the dems at the midterms. I’m still concerned the dems will screw it up like they previously have going after non sense issues that aren’t relevant to the middle class and moderate citizens. My other concern is if the dems get in, they don’t screw it up going after useless bills or investigations that everyone knows will go nowhere. I’m praying it will be a wake up call to both parties. …compromise is good thing.

      • I wish it were so, SIr Cap, but this is impossible with the current administration in place. It must get replaced and then, hopefully, we’ll get out of the banana republic mode.

    • “One state senate race does not make an easy path for the dems at the midterms.”

Sir Cap, I must point out a couple of points. First, this happened in a deep red district in a deep red state. Second, this is not the first election in which a Democrat won in a red district and in a red state. Third, the general trend for maga’s popularity in the country is going downward. The tendency for a Democratic win in November is clearly present.
At the moment, for I am as concerned as you are that the Democrats might somehow screw things up. Let’s hope our worries are for naught.

      • I hear you Sir OFP but I’ve seen dems and republicans screw up golden opportunities. Will history repeat itself, who knows.

  3. The vote in Texas is meaningless. It’s coming from an area of Texas that is owned by the IslamoCommuNazi Democrats. So, naturally, the local dupes, dopes, and dummies from the IslamoCommuNazi region are going to vote IslamoCommuNazi Democrat.

    • That’s quite an ignorant comment, seeing that the district was deep red, meaning a “Republican” having won the last election. How do you explain that?
