Several House Democrats are signaling they would vote to save House Speaker Mike Johnson from GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s effort to oust him if he agreed to put a Ukraine aid package on the House floor for an up or down vote.
“If he does the responsible thing which is allowing members of Congress to vote on a bill that will pass and is in our national security interests and then subsequent to that a nonserious actor who does not want to govern brings a motion to vacate, yes, I would motion to table in that circumstance,” moderate Virginia Democratic Rep Abigail Spanberger told CNN’s Manu Raju.
Other House Democrats signaled they would motion to table – kill – Greene’s resolution if it came to that.
New York Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, who was recently reelected in a special election to fill Santos’ seat, said he would vote to keep Johnson as speaker “because it’s absurd he’s being kicked out for doing the right thing, keeping the government open.”
Ohio Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur, one of the few Democrats running in a Trump district, told CNN’s Dana Bash she wants to keep her options open and “it is a real consideration at this point” that perhaps the politically and policy wise to save Johnson.

This is how low our government has sunk. This useless oxygen thief does one thing right and this should be enough to save his job? And, I’m not sure what the Democrats are wishing for. Johnson has been a non-stop disaster. I’m no fan of Taylor-Greene, but I hope she gets him sacked. Then, I hope we’ll get another, better person to assume the speakership.
I think it’s too close to the elections that we could hope for a better speaker, certainly given the hard right congressional delegation. So, I say let the dems save him and if that happens I may vote for a dem in November.
So be it, if the asshole puts Ukraine aid up for a vote. But, I have my doubts. He’s just too much of an asshole.
I don’t know if that’s smart, neither. Why not vote for a center/right Dem or even a moderate Republican instead? I do think there should be a reasonable alternative, a candidate who is known for his/her ability to forge compromises and who will pursuit a centrist course for the rest of the term. Many voters would love that. And it would need only a dozen or so GOP moderates, plus the Dems, to make that happen. Why support Johnson when the reasonable majority in the House could replace him with a much better option, really?

To elaborate further on this: The new Speaker should make it clear that he/she is working for bipartisan solutions. To make that point, it would be advisable to switch the party affiliation to Independent. To get laws done would then require support from both sides of the aisle, of course. So, it’s necessary to get minority Speaker Jeffries on board, as a deputy. Another deputy should come from the moderate Republican caucus, preferrably someone well connected, with experience in compromise deals. And then the House could be working for the best interests of the nation again, in a stunning upset!
This probably would increase the election chances of centrist Republicans and Dems in ‘purple’ districts, too. After all those calls for a ‘third way’ in recent years, finally a ‘middle of the road’ coalition of reasonable politicians – that should be a hit with many voters. The convincing democratic (small d!) answer to the rise of extremists on the fringes of the political landscape! What’s not to like? It just takes the political will, and some courage for trying a new approach, to get it done! 😎
From my understanding Sir Gray, the republicans hold a very narrow margin. That means the hard right, even it’s a small number can dictate terms and who will be speaker unless the dems tell Marjorie to fuck off and join the moderate republicans. We need something to tell the MAGA assholes that their time is up.
Wait a moment, Sir Bill, those extremist Trumpists can only lead the GOP by the nose, like a sad circus bear, because the centrist majority of Congressmen didn’t unite to counter them! But if there’s enough Republicans fed up with that, a coalition of centrist lawmakers could run the show. The Dems are in the minority now, they have nothing to lose but lots to gain from trying this. The ‘Squad’ may not play long with that, though, but a vast majority of Dems probably would. And that would call the extremist right wing minority’s bluff, the time of grandstanding loudmouths like MTG and Gaetz would be up, indeed. All hat, but the cattle ran away! 😁
A daring move, in this polarized political climate, sure. But, neither Dems nor anti-Trump Republicans have anything to lose right now. They can’t get their bills thru anyway, because of Trumpist obstructionism, so why not make a stand and change that idiotic situation? As the ancient poet wrote: “Audaces fortuna iuvat” (Fortune favors the bold)
The Republicans hold an ever-shrinking majority. If all Democrats vote for Hakeem Jeffries, it would not take much to put him over the top. GOP Rep. Mike Gallagher announced his retirement effective April 19 – which is a big FU to the Republicans, because under Wisconsin state law, vacancies after the second Tuesday in April are filled in the general election, so Gallagher’s replacement will be decided in November and his seat will remain empty until January. He also signed the discharge petition to let the Senate’s Ukraine aid bill come to the floor.
If Johnson does get sacked, things could get interesting.
Ok, Larry, that’s an option that needs to be investigated, too. Dems who are on friendly terms with moderate Republicans need to check if there’s a will to get compromise deals done under Jeffries’ leadership, sure. The best possible outcome for the Dems, but I suspect this would look too much like switching sides for the Republicans involved. They have to think about security risks by angry and possibly violent Trumpsters, too. So, I guess they would prefer a way that looks more like a bipartisan coaltion. 🤔
In order to win, he just has to get a majority of people who are voting by name. So if enough R’s vote “present” then Jeffries could get it without any Republicans voting *for* him.
I think sacking the sack of shit is the best bet. He had his chance since October, and he proved to be a walking disaster. The House is getting hardly anything done with him in this post.

Indeed Sir Gray your analysis and others could be correct if it isn’t for one outstanding issue…in the past the US electorate voted for “Leaders”, individuals who were independent thinkers and worked for their constituents. Unfortunately today we only have followers. Individuals who only vote according to the wishes of their party leaders, for the most part. It is not unusual to see each parties politicians, vote in a hoarde. Yes there are exceptions, but I’m sure those exceptions are approved by the party leaders. IMO
In other words, the quality of our politicians is going down. Are they made in china?

The House is in such shambles, that it’s hard to keep up with the mess.
My opinion: agree to save him if he puts the Ukraine aid package on the House floor for an up or down vote. But not for doing the simple minimum of doing his job (keeping the government open).
If he’s rescued without allowing a vote on the Ukraine aid package, he’ll continue dithering and talking about coming up with a new package at some point in the future – delaying while Ukrainians are dying.
Indeed, if he allows a vote on the aid package! But, I have my doubts, seeing that the jerk has no integrity.
