The lawmakers discussed the opportunity of meeting in the Normandy Four format in April or May
Ukrainian and Russian MPs met in Moscow as participants of the Normandy Four talks. The lawmakers of Ukrainian and Russian parliaments negotiated in the Russian capital on March 10.
The main goal of the meeting was the presentation of the “parliamentary dimension of the Normandy Format”, which is taking place within the initiative called “Interparliamentary dialogue for peace: Ukraine-Russia-Germany-France”.
The parliamentarians discussed the topic of a peaceful solution of Donbas and living up to Minsk agreements, as there is no recognized alternative to this mechanism.
Viktor Medvedchuk, the head of the Ukrainian delegation and chairman of the political council of Opposition Platform – For Life party reported that the current situation in Ukraine remains quite complicated. This is why the Ukrainian opposition force tries to implement the “parliamentary dimension of the Normandy Format”, he said.
“This is how (…) Putin called this dimension and the project of interparliamentary ties – during the meeting in December, when we informed him of the creation of an interfaction union of lawmakers in the Ukrainian Parliament, and when we offered the meeting of lawmakers of Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany”, Medvedchuk added.
According to him, heads of the states that are actively involved in the Normandy format may assist, above all, the parliamentarians of the Ukrainian Parliament in order to implement Minsk agreements. The main framework of these agreements lies with passing certain laws concerning the special status of Donbas, amnesty for those who did not commit any war crimes, elections and changes to the Constitution.
Ukrainian and Russian lawmakers concluded that bilateral cooperation should be continued and boosted.
The interfaction parliamentary union was created in the Ukrainian Parliament in November 2019. Viktor Medvedchuk chaired it. The initiative foresees that MPs from the Normandy Four member countries will be involved in the peace process.
