Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin arrived in Kyiv for an unannounced visit, CNN reported in the morning of Oct. 21.
His visit comes as the future of U.S. aid to Ukraine remains uncertain due to the upcoming presidential election and as Russia continues to make gradual but consistent advancements on the battlefield.
Austin is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to discuss Ukraine’s military needs and how the U.S. can continue supporting the Ukrainian Armed Forces into 2025.
The visit allows Austin to “take a step back” and review the trajectory of U.S.-Ukraine relations over the past two and a half years of the war, U.S. Defense Department official said.
While in Kyiv, Austin is not expected to announce new military aid or grant permission for Ukraine to use long-range weapons to strike deep into Russia, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Austin confirmed his visit to Kyiv on his X page.
“This is my fourth visit to Ukraine as Defense Secretary, showing that the United States, along with the international community, continues to support Ukraine,” he wrote.
On Oct. 16, U.S. President Joe Biden announced a new $425 million aid package for Ukraine, expected to arrive in the coming months.
The package includes air defense interceptors, tactical air defense systems, additional artillery, hundreds of armored vehicles, and thousands of extra combat vehicles.

I was hoping for a step forward and the announcement saying Ukraine can destroy any targets in russia with US weapons.
