Decommunization in action: Gorky’s bust removed in Odessa, two shopping centers left without names

The bust of Maxim Gorky, which was located in Mark Twain Park (former Gorky Park), was dismantled on the morning of September 13.

As a representative of the park administration told Dumskaya, the day before they received an order from the Khadzhibey district administration on the need to dismantle the bust in accordance with the law on decommunization and decolonization.

“We dismantled it ourselves. The bust was not on anyone’s balance sheet. It is currently in our storage. We don’t know yet what to do with it,” said an administration employee.

It should be noted that the decision to remove the bust was made by members of the historical and toponymic commission of the Odessa City Council back in March of last year.

In addition, today decommunization has reached the supermarket “Tavria V Suvorovsky”. The word “Suvorovsky” was removed from the sign there.

The administration of the Dumskaya retail chain explained that in connection with the renaming of the city’s districts, in particular Suvorovsky to Peresypsky, it was decided to remove from the sign the part that contained the old name of the district.

In addition, today it became known that City Center Kotovsky also got rid of the last word in its name.
