Alena Getmanchuk is confident that this is “far from the worst appointment.”

Although some of the convictions of retired General Keith Kellogg do not suit Kiev , his appointment to the post of special representative for Ukraine and Russia in the future Donald Trump administration is positive. This opinion was expressed by the director of the Kiev analytical center “New Europe” Alena Getmanchuk, DW reports .

According to her, it is very difficult to say today what the cooperation will be like, but she is confident that this is “far from the worst appointment”:

“In particular, given some of the candidates who were named for this position. Kellogg’s appointment is rather positive for Ukraine.”

Getmanchuk recalled that Kellogg visited Ukraine, and not only Kyiv, but also Kharkov, Izyum, Donetsk region, Odessa, Izmail. In addition, he has 40 years of military experience, the expert added: “Obviously, he will understand the situation very well.”

In addition, as Getmanchuk stated, Trump considers Kellogg’s opinion authoritative for him, and it is good that “he will deal with Ukrainian issues on a practically daily basis, and not in between the Middle East, Central America.”

Hetmanchuk also emphasized that Kellogg had previously expressed positions that Ukraine welcomes.

“There is a very correct interpretation of the relatively weak position in the US at the start of the invasion, the lack of leadership to prevent the start of the war, the relatively slow supply of weapons. He recently said that permission for long-range strikes should have been given a year ago.”

Speaking about issues in which Kellogg’s position does not coincide with Ukraine’s, the analyst listed the following:

“The question of the gradual lifting of sanctions against Russia, freezing the war on the front line and Ukraine’s membership in NATO.”

In her opinion, they will need to be worked on.
