Cases of dolphins and sturgeons washing ashore are also being recorded in Mariupol and surrounding areas. According to eyewitnesses, such incidents are no longer isolated.
The Center for the Study of Occupation emphasizes that the consequences of the pollution have already spread from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov. They link the situation to the large-scale water contamination with fuel oil following the accident of Russian tankers near Anapa.
Furthermore, ecologists warn of a further deterioration of the situation during the summer period due to rising air and water temperatures. In their view, this could accelerate the degradation of the marine ecosystem.
Reports also note that pollution and the consequences of hostilities are negatively impacting the state of the flora and fauna of the Sea of Azov.
