BREAKING NEWS: US lifts sanctions that prevented Hungary from building Paks-2 nuclear power plant together with Rosatom, says Szijjarto

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that the US government has allegedly lifted sanctions that blocked Hungary’s expansion of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant in cooperation with the Russian company Rosatom.

As Censor.NET reports , Szijjártó wrote about this on the social network X.

“The US has lifted sanctions that blocked the construction of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant. These politically motivated measures were introduced by the Biden administration just before Donald Trump took office. I am grateful to the Trump administration, as this project will guarantee our future energy supply,” the message says.

In turn, Bloomberg reports  that the project, led by Hungary’s Russian partner, Rosatom, has been plagued by legal problems and significant delays in recent years.

“Prime Minister Viktor Orban also frequently clashes with his European Union colleagues over his close ties with Russia, which supplies the bulk of Hungary’s energy imports,” the article says.

Szijjártó also noted that disputes with the EU over oil and gas purchases are likely to continue, despite progress on the nuclear front.

“Construction of the main equipment units for the Paks NPP is ongoing in Russia and France. In Paks, construction can now proceed at a faster pace,” he added.

At the same time, the publication notes that there was no confirmation from the US of the lifting of any sanctions.

What is known about the “Paks-2” project?

Paks-2 is an expansion of Hungary’s only nuclear power plant, Paks. It is being built for Hungary by the Russian state energy company Rosatom. Hungary aims to expand the Paks plant with two Russian-made VVER (water-water power reactor) reactors with a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts each. Hungary signed this agreement with Russia in 2014. Джерело: https://censor.net/ua/n3560579

  2. Can someone explain to Trump the word ‘sanctions’……………..or ‘tariffs’……………..or……….

  3. Why is it up to America to put European security and sovereignty at risk. Hungary should leave the EU and join the Russian federation maybe.
