Putin is now taking a firmer stance than ever.
US intelligence has warned that Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin is determined to continue the war against Ukraine and pursue victory on the battlefield more decisively than ever.
Intelligence agencies see no sign of Russia’s willingness to compromise with Ukraine, despite US President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker peace talks, according to an analysis presented to members of Congress this month, NBC News reports .
This assessment is consistent with the previous view of American and Western intelligence agencies on the Russian regime’s position since February 2022. Now, according to American officials, Putin has “dug himself into his position” more deeply than ever, despite massive Russian troop losses and economic difficulties at home.
The Russian dictator intends to expand Russia’s control over Ukrainian territories to justify the human and financial losses, according to an intelligence assessment.
The White House, for its part, reportedly declined to comment on the intelligence, citing Trump’s public statements: “As the President has said, these are significant sanctions against two of Russia’s largest oil companies, and he hopes they will help end the war. The United States will continue to advocate for a peaceful resolution, but permanent peace is only possible with Russia’s willingness to negotiate in good faith.”
As European diplomats and former intelligence officials note, the combination of new sanctions, Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, and growing military support from Europe could eventually change the Kremlin’s calculations.
