European partners received a notification from the State Department about the US withdrawal from the anti-Russian information initiative.
The United States is terminating memorandums with European countries on countering disinformation initiated during the Joe Biden administration, the Financial Times reports, citing sources.
Last week, European governments received notice from the US State Department that the memorandums of understanding were being terminated. The documents were signed in 2023-2024 and provided for a unified approach to identifying and exposing malicious information from Russia, China and Iran.
The initiative was coordinated by the Global Engagement Center (GEC), a structure of the State Department that was responsible for combating foreign disinformation and propaganda by terrorist groups.
Former GEC chief James Rubin criticized Washington’s decision, calling it a “unilateral act of disarmament” in the information war.
“Information warfare is a reality of our time, and artificial intelligence will only increase the risks associated with it,” Rubin said.
According to him, over the past year, about 22 countries in Europe and Africa have joined the Biden administration’s program, which aimed to create a joint system to counter information manipulation and develop a collective response to threats.
