Ukrainian drones have attacked gas infrastructure in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug , the main gas-producing region of the Russian Federation. This is reported by Telegram groups, as well as official authorities in the region.
According to the Exilenova+ Telegram channel , the Novorengoy condensate preparation plant for transportation was under attack.
“The enterprise is one of the key facilities of the region’s gas condensate infrastructure. The design capacity is about 19.5 million tons of raw materials per year,” the report says.
Local governor Dmitry Artyukhov confirmed the attack, but according to the current protocol, he reported that Russian air defense allegedly shot down all the drones and that everything that flew in was “debris.”
“Today, a drone attack on one of the industrial facilities in Novy Urengoy was repelled. As a result of the fall of the UAV debris, a fire broke out. Emergency services specialists are working at the scene,” he said .
It is worth noting that from the borders of Ukraine to Novy Urengoy there are about 2,800 kilometers as the crow flies.
Yamal gas infrastructure
The Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug is Russia’s main energy region: it is home to more than half of the country’s natural gas reserves, and production accounts for about 80% of all Russian production. At the same time, the okrug has significant oil resources – more than 13% of the Russian Federation’s reserves, which gives it the second place in terms of production after the Khanty-Mansiysk Okrug.
As UNIAN reported, Europe is still largely dependent on Russian liquefied gas , which brings Moscow millions of euros every day, despite sanctions. And Europe receives the lion’s share of these supplies by tankers through an export terminal located in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
Ukraine is trying to turn Russia’s energy sector into its weak point, carrying out long-range attacks on oil refineries and considering strikes on LNG terminals. However, such actions could cause conflict with Western governments, as most of the specialized tankers are owned by European companies and the success of the campaign depends on the EU’s position on Russian gas imports.
