BREAKING NEWS: Lavrov called for turning Ukraine into a huge “buffer zone” after the war

According to the politician, the Russian Federation will not agree to an outcome in which “the regime ruling in Kyiv” would remain in power after the war.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called for Ukraine to be turned into a vast “buffer zone” after the war ends, as Moscow continues to make demands that could undermine new U.S.-led efforts to revive peace talks, the Kyiv Post reports .

Lavrov said that Ukraine should become the buffer zone needed to prevent future threats from its western neighbor.

“Everyone claims that Russia needs a ‘buffer zone’. Let Ukraine become this buffer zone,” the minister said.

At the same time, three people familiar with the Kremlin’s position say that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin plans to leave the occupied territories of Sumy and Kharkiv regions as permanent buffer zones while continuing his attempts to seize all of Donetsk region.

When Lavrov was asked how Moscow could guarantee that the war would not break out again in 25 years, he replied that Ukraine could not be allowed to maintain what he called a “Russophobic, aggressive, neo-Nazi regime” that threatened Russia.

The politician added that Russia would not accept an outcome in which “the regime ruling in Kyiv” would remain in power after the war. According to him, such a government would continue to violate “human rights, language rights, and the right to choose a religion.”

Also in another interview, Lavrov stressed that Russia will continue hostilities until the West makes concessions, accusing Western supporters of Ukraine of repeatedly obstructing the conclusion of a peace agreement.

In addition, he rejected new Western proposals regarding Ukraine, adding that the West should not “make a fuss” about its “new ideas.”

“These comments highlight the discrepancy between Washington’s desire to resume diplomatic talks and Moscow’s persistent demands for a post-war Ukraine that must conform to Russian security and political conditions,” the publication concluded.
