US President Donald Trump has told European leaders that he believes a peace deal can be reached quickly if Ukraine agrees to give Russia the rest of Donbas, even those areas not occupied by Russian troops.
The New York Times reports this , citing sources, Censor.NET reports.
It is noted that Trump intends to present this proposal to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday during a meeting at the White House, to which European leaders have also been invited.
The NYT writes that after meeting with Putin, Trump abandoned the demand for an immediate ceasefire and believes that a peace treaty can be quickly agreed upon if Zelensky agrees to give Russia Donbas, even those territories that are not occupied by Russian troops.
The publication notes that Zelensky and European leaders have strongly opposed such a concession regarding the unoccupied territory, which also houses important defense lines and is rich in minerals. Ukrainian officials have said that the final agreement cannot include Kyiv’s consent to the transfer of any of its sovereign territory, which would violate the country’s Constitution.
In return, Putin allegedly offered a ceasefire in the rest of Ukraine along the current front lines and a “written promise” not to attack Ukraine or any other European nation, senior officials said.
They pointed out to Trump that the Russian dictator had frequently violated his written commitments.
The officials stressed that Ukraine will make its own decisions regarding its territory, adding that international borders should not be changed by force.
At the same time, European officials reported that Trump said that Putin allegedly agreed that Ukraine should have reliable security guarantees after the agreement was concluded, but not within NATO.

As a reminder, on the night of August 16 (Kyiv time), a three-on-three meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin ended in Alaska. The leaders’ talks lasted almost three hours.
Trump was accompanied by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, while Putin was accompanied by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and aide Yuri Ushakov.
Trump previously reported that he planned to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders after talks with the Russian dictator. Trump also said that a deal to end the war depends on Zelensky.
