According to the results of the first half of 2025, the production of freight cars in Russia fell by 17% year-on-year – to 34.3 thousand units.

The collapse in railcar production is deepening amid a decline in transportation and worsening financial results of Russian Railways (RZD), writes The Moscow Times.
It is noted that the decline has been ongoing since February, when 5.9 thousand cars were produced. In May-June, this figure decreased to 4.1 thousand. According to industry representatives, the deviation from the initial annual plans may reach 73.3%, which threatens manufacturers and related sectors of metal rolling and components.
According to the estimates of the Association of Railway Equipment Manufacturers (APM) of Russia, the production of certain types of rolling stock has decreased the most: hoppers – by 80%, covered wagons – by 40%, platforms – by 16%. At the same time, the production of wagons with an axle load of 25 tons per axle has increased – to 12.7 thousand units (+14.1%).
At the same time, major repairs of freight cars fell by 57.3% – to 25.1 thousand, and 195 thousand cars underwent depot repairs (–1.2%).
The decline also affected key components: the production of solid-rolled wheels decreased by a quarter – to 756.3 thousand pieces; side frames and bogie upper spring beams – by 11% (to 168.7 and 85.6 thousand, respectively); shock absorbers – by 29% (to 110.2 thousand).
According to industry analysts, orders have collapsed in almost all categories, with the exception of certain types of tankers and hoppers-mineral carriers. Operating profitability and rental rates are falling, and manufacturers will likely need government support.
It was previously reported that Russia would abandon deepening the canal for trade with Iran due to rising costs.
