BREAKING NEWS: Russia’s largest refinery in Omsk halts operations after Ukrainian attack – Reuters

The Omsk Refinery is located deep in Siberia.

The Omsk Oil Refinery (REF) has suspended operations after a Ukrainian drone attack, Reuters reported, citing two sources.

It is noted that the Omsk Refinery is the largest in Russia. The enterprise was attacked on July 6 by units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The agency recalled that the Omsk refinery is located deep in Siberia. This attack was one of the most remote since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.

Journalists noted that the shutdown of the plant, which is the largest gasoline producer in Russia, is likely to exacerbate fuel shortages across the country.

“As a result of the strike, the facilities of the Omsk Oil Refinery were damaged. There were no casualties among the plant’s personnel,” said Anatoly Seryshev, plenipotentiary representative of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Siberia in the Siberian Federal District.

According to sources, the impact caused a fire and damaged the CDU-10 primary oil distillation unit, which accounts for about 38% of the plant’s production capacity (24,580 metric tons per day).

According to the St. Petersburg International Commodity Exchange, as of Tuesday, July 7, the Omsk Refinery has stopped selling gasoline and diesel fuel on the exchange.

Sources told reporters that another primary processing unit, CDU-11, had been shut down. It accounts for 37% of the plant’s production capacity and is capable of processing 24,000 tons of oil per day. While the unit itself was not damaged, some connections necessary for its operation were damaged.

The agency added that the Omsk Refinery has two decommissioned primary processing units – CDU-7 and CDU-8. Each of them has a production capacity of 10,000 tons.

Sources noted that in 2024, the Omsk Refinery processed 22 million tons of oil, or about 440,000 barrels per day, producing 5 million tons of gasoline and 8 million tons of diesel fuel.

Attack on the Omsk Refinery – what is known

Previously, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that on July 6, units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck the Omsk Oil Refinery , which is located almost 2,500 km from the state border of Ukraine.

The General Staff noted that this refinery is the most powerful oil refining enterprise in the Russian Federation (over 21 million tons per year) and specializes in the production of a wide range of fuels, lubricants and petrochemical products. The plant has one of the highest oil refining depths in the Russian Federation (about 99%).

In addition, the refinery produces high-octane automobile gasolines (AI-92, AI-95, G-Drive 100), Euro-5 diesel fuel, and aviation kerosene (TS-1 and RT grades).

A hit and subsequent fire were recorded on the territory of the enterprise.
