Dmitriev’s visit to Washington may indicate the Kremlin’s attempts to resume economic dialogue with the United States, despite new sanctions and tensions over the war in Ukraine.

Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and special Kremlin envoy, made a surprise visit to the United States for official talks with representatives of the Donald Trump administration, CNN reported , citing sources familiar with the visit.

The meeting comes just days after President Trump announced tough new sanctions against Russia and his decision to “cancel” a planned summit with Vladimir Putin.

According to sources, Dmitriev is expected to discuss next steps in bilateral relations between the US and Russia. He is a known advocate for economic rapprochement between the two countries and has even previously proposed the creation of a symbolic project – the “Trump-Putin Tunnel” between Alaska and the Russian Far East.

Dmitriev, who was born in Ukraine, was educated at Harvard and Stanford, and worked at McKinsey and Goldman Sachs. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he was sanctioned by the US Treasury Department, which labeled him a “close associate of Putin.”

In April of this year, Dmitriev visited Washington, becoming the first Russian official to be granted entry to the United States since the war began.
