A 2nd-rank patrol ship was destroyed by the Sargan-3000 naval unmanned aerial vehicle.

The Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed the Russian FSB border ship “Izumrud”, which in 2018 participated in the attack on Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait. This was announced by the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“Ukrainian military sailors sank a 2nd-rank border guard ship with the Sargan-3000 naval unmanned complex near Novorossiysk. There are dead and wounded among the ship’s crew,” the report says.

It is noted that it was the “Izumrud” that participated in the attack on Ukrainian Navy ships in the Kerch Strait on November 25, 2018.

“Retribution is inevitable. What will happen next…”, the Ukrainian military emphasize.

For reference

PSKR “Izumrud” was launched in 2014. The ship was equipped with a helipad. Length: 62.5 m. Displacement: about 630-750 tons. Maximum speed: up to 27 knots.

What preceded this?

On November 25, 2018, Russia blocked passage to the Kerch Strait for the Ukrainian tugboat “Yani Kapu” and two boats “Berdyansk” and “Nikopol”, which were making a planned passage from the Odessa seaport to the port of Mariupol.

The command of the Ukrainian Navy emphasized that the Russian side was informed in advance of the intention to make the crossing, which is provided for by international norms. However, the Russian border guard ship “Don” rammed a Ukrainian raid tug, as a result of which it was destroyed.

Also, when leaving the Kerch Strait, Russian ships opened aimed fire on Ukrainian ships that were already returning to Odessa. Six Ukrainians were wounded, and a total of 24 servicemen were captured . In September 2019, the sailors returned home as part of a prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia.

Later, the Russian Federation also returned the captured ships, which had been literally gutted by the Russians, who even “removed” the ceiling lights, sockets and toilets, as well as some communication and navigation equipment.

On May 22, 2020, Ukraine submitted a memorandum with the evidentiary basis in the case against the Russian Federation to the UN International Tribunal.

In the summer of 2022, it became known that the International Arbitration Court supported Ukraine in the case of the seizure of sailors in the Kerch Strait. It was said that the arbitration court rejected the main objections of the Russian Federation and supported Ukraine’s position.
