The German government will pay thousands of US base workers in the country now that they are at risk of losing their wages due to the shutdown in the United States. The US government shutdown is now the second-longest on record.

The German government has approved the “unplanned expenditure” so that October salaries can be paid on time, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance said. This affects a total of 11,000 local employees working for one of the dozens of military posts in Germany.

During previous shutdowns, employees in Germany continued to receive their wages. However, the ministry told AFP that it is unclear whether this is the case this time. The spokesperson called the contributions “a sign of solidarity with the US forces in Germany and their civilian employees.” A total of approximately 35,000 US military personnel are stationed in Germany.

The US government shutdown entered its 22nd day on Wednesday, making it the second-longest shutdown in history. The longest was during Trump’s first term, when the government remained closed for 35 days.

A shutdown occurs when the US Congress cannot agree on a budget. Neither Republicans nor Democrats seem inclined to make concessions quickly this time. Democrats want Trump to partially reverse healthcare cuts first. Trump hopes the shutdown will make the Democrats look bad.
