  1. It’s glaringly obvious that keeping the Epstein files locked up is analogous to Trump admitting his guilt in child abuse.

Why some Americans are for Russia and against Ukraine
In his column, Brian Bonner, just back from a long summer in the U.S., looks at what the MAGA crowd thinks about Ukraine. And he meets an 8-year old with a brilliant analysis of the situation.

TWO GRUMPY OLD MEN ON UKRAINE
      AUG 13

      BY BRIAN BONNER
I spent 10 mostly blissful weeks this summer outside of Ukraine, mainly in America but also in Poland, from May to July. The best part was not having to endure Russia’s intensifying, almost nightly missile and drone attacks that always make you wonder if you will still be alive in the morning.
I traveled to six states, playing golf, eating too much and then getting indigestion from the poisonous state of American politics. My country is in big trouble, polarized by the grievances and divisive rhetoric of our commander-in-chief, who pits my compatriots against each other so viciously that civilized debate is scarce.

Since I had to spend dozens of hours traveling hundreds of miles in a rental car across my vast country, I used that time for another mission: To understand why some of my fellow Americans are pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian. To do that, I kept my car radio tuned to the right-wing talk shows. The airwaves are full of pro-MAGA and pro-President Donald Trump programs, listened to by people who think he can do no wrong.
From the discussions, here’s what I learned about why some Americans are siding with the imperialistic aggressor that wants to end Ukraine as a nation. The MAGA crowd believes that Ukrainians have gotten too much financial support from U.S. taxpayers and want those billions redirected to Americans instead. Some believe Ukraine is not so much a nation as it is a CIA outpost that is provoking Russia. And, yes, they talk about Ukraine’s corruption. As for Russia, many in the MAGA camp are under the delusion that President Vladimir Putin is a strong anti-woke leader whose nation is a bastion of conservative Christian values. Genuinely or not, they buy into the argument that Russia had to fight to stop NATO from encroaching on the Kremlin through Ukraine.
As Russian exiled opposition leader Garry Kasparov wrote recently, American gullibility about Russia has a long history. In Soviet times, some Americans saw the USSR as a utopian workers’ paradise, not the big gulag that it was. More recently, Kasparov wrote about Derek and DeAnna Huffman, who relocated to Russia with their children to escape “LGBT indoctrination” in their home state of Texas. Huffman joined the Russian military, hoping for a non-combat role but ended up getting thrown into frontline meatgrinder with little training or Russian-language skills.
But even the right-wing and Christian radio shows in America didn’t spend much time talking about Russia’s war on Ukraine when I was listening. Their main talking points boiled down to an almost slavish devotion to Trump and hatred of Democrats, liberals, socialists and homosexuals/transgenders. Christian love was in short supply.

That’s the rationale as far as I understand. Unfortunately, Ukraine is no longer the hot topic that it was only a few years ago. Even for my friends and family, the war is far from top of mind. Prominent coverage was also harder to find on the TV news. Even among those closest to me, the dominant reaction was to ask why I am so reckless as to want to return to Kyiv. There are far fewer Ukrainian flags being flown, compared to 2022, but some remain displayed in publicly visible places.
But even those paying a modest amount of attention know what’s happening and who is to blame. The 8-year-old grandson of a close friend of mine had a clear understanding of the situation.
When he found out I lived in Ukraine, he asked: “Isn’t that where Russia took a part of the country and won’t give it back? So, they’re fighting a war to get that part of their country back, but Russia keeps bombing them.”
Brilliant analysis in its simplicity and accuracy.
      So there is hope.
Brian Bonner writes an occasional column for Two Grumpy Old Men on Ukraine (of which, of course, he was one of the founders), letting the rest of us benefit from his almost three decades of experience in and around Ukraine. Brian led the Kyiv Post from 2008 to 2021.

      • As a conservative, I hate socialism too, because it’s just Marxism watered down and repackaged.
I like liberals because essentially they want the same thing as conservatives : freedom.
It’s impossible recognize Maga as conservative. It very clearly doesn’t believe in freedom. It and its forerunners; the alt-right, QAnon etc, are devoted fans of putler. As can be seen by their media outlets and spokespeople : Gateway Pundit, Breitbart, infowars, Musk, Bannon, Loomer, Moscow Marge and Carlson.
Many members of this mindset are of course employed in the Krasnov regime.
Only one hard line Maga supports Ukraine; Mark Levin. Which is why Moscow Marge is constantly hate posting online about him.

  2. Great article from Bonner, thanks for sharing. After he left KP never heard from him. Glad he’s still around.
