Brave1 Shows How Ukraine Shoots Down russia’s Banderol Cruise Missiles for Less Than They Cost

A Ukrainian air defense system developed by a participant in the Brave1 defense technology cluster is already capable of intercepting russia’s Banderol missiles, with the cost of a single interception reportedly significantly lower than the cost of the target itself

Brave1 said that one of the systems developed by a member of the cluster has already demonstrated its ability to destroy russian Banderol strike systems. The organization did not disclose the developer, the system’s technical specifications, or the exact cost of an interception.

However, Brave1 noted that several Ukrainian defense products are already capable of countering the Banderol. The developers are now expected to further improve and scale up these systems to strengthen the protection of Ukrainian cities.

The cost-effectiveness of such interceptors is particularly important as russia continues to expand the use of new strike systems against Ukraine. Using an expensive surface-to-air missile against a relatively low-cost target can quickly become unsustainable during large-scale attacks. A cheaper interceptor could therefore help Ukraine improve the economics of air defense while preserving more expensive missile stocks for higher-priority threats.

The Banderol, also designated S8000, is a russian jet-powered loitering munition developed by JSC Kronstadt. Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence (HUR) also describes it as a cruise missile.

The weapon is typically launched from a russian Orion unmanned aerial vehicle, although russia is reportedly exploring other deployment options, including ground-based platforms.

The Banderol can reportedly reach speeds of up to 650 km/h and has a range of approximately 500 km. Its flight profile combines characteristics of a cruise missile and a jet-powered drone, making it a more demanding target for traditional short-range air defense systems.

russia first used the Banderol against Kyiv in June 2026, after which its use against Ukraine became increasingly frequent. During an attack, the missile-drone can descend to an altitude of around 200 meters before reaching its target.

Despite its relatively high speed and range, the Banderol is not invulnerable to Ukrainian air defenses. The emergence of dedicated Ukrainian countermeasures suggests that the country is already adapting its air defense architecture to deal with this new class of russian strike weapons.

“Developing and scaling innovative solutions to protect Ukrainian cities,” Brave1 said.

Brave1 emphasized that the development and scaling of such systems could help create a more economically sustainable air defense network capable of protecting Ukrainian cities against increasingly diverse russian threats.
