This night, the Defense Forces shot down 28 of the 32 Shahed-136 kamikaze drones launched by the Russians. One of them was equipped with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite communications system. The military-analytical portal Defense Express received the corresponding photos from its own sources.
As analysts note, in the past, the Russians have already experimented with installing 4G modems with Ukrainian SIM cards on Shaheds. Therefore, the appearance of drones with Starlink “was only a matter of time.”
“And now we are talking about a very wide and powerful feedback channel with the drone, the ability to transmit information from it and change the flight mission at any distance. That is, turning Shahed, first of all, into a reconnaissance vehicle,” analysts explain.
It is noted that thanks to the Starlink connection, the drone will be able to transmit information about the Ukrainian air defense positions, including photos or video images, collected by onboard sensors to the Russians. Starlink also allows the Shahed’s flight to be adjusted in real time to hit, for example, moving targets.
“The choice of the Shahed platform for such purposes may be related to its flight range capabilities of about 2,000 km and a fairly significant free volume in the middle of the fuselage. It may also be related to the “creativity” in Alabuga, where these drones are assembled,” analysts say.
