Biden stated that under his administration, the United States provided sufficient support to Ukraine.

The pressure from the administration of US President Donald Trump on Ukraine to hand over part of its territory to Russia is “modern appeasement,” former US President Joe Biden said in an interview with the BBC .

Putin and Trump

Journalists recalled that Biden has repeatedly said that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will not stop if he cedes territories to him as part of a peace deal. In an interview, the former US president said that “people who believe otherwise are stupid.”

Speaking in Delaware on May 5, he said he was concerned about the deterioration of relations between the United States and Europe under Trump. The former US president believes the current American leader will “change modern world history.”

Speaking to reporters, Biden condemned Trump’s calls to return the Panama Canal, buy Greenland, and make Canada the 51st state.

“What the hell is going on here? What kind of president even says that? We’re not like that. We’re for freedom, democracy, opportunity, not confiscation,” he said.

Biden also commented on the Trump administration’s claim that Ukraine needs to give up territory to reach a peace deal, saying it’s similar to how former British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain tried to appease Adolf Hitler in the 1930s in a failed attempt to avoid a catastrophic war in Europe.

“This is modern appeasement,” Biden said.

In addition, the former US president is concerned that Europe may lose confidence that “America is still the leader.”

“Leaders of the continent are asking themselves, what do I do now?… Can I rely on the United States? Will they be there?” Biden stressed.

In addition, the former American leader criticized Trump’s approach to dialogue with Putin. He was outraged that the US administration’s attitude towards the Russian dictator is quite favorable:

“I just don’t understand how people think that if we let a dictator, a bandit, decide that he’s going to seize large swaths of land that don’t belong to him, that that’s going to satisfy him. I don’t quite understand.”

Biden also expressed fears that some NATO countries bordering Russia would have to make concessions to Putin if Ukraine cedes part of its territories.
