Biden administration ‘open’ to providing long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine, – Politico

The Pentagon is already working on modifications to allow Ukraine to launch weapons from its fighter jets.

The Biden administration is “open” to providing Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles, which would give Ukraine’s F-16 fighter jets more combat power, as Kyiv seeks to gain further momentum in the fight against Russia.

The White House’s willingness to provide Ukraine with Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM) comes amid a surprisingly successful ground operation by Kyiv deep in Russia, now in its second week, embarrassing Vladimir Putin and forcing him to redeploy troops from the battlefield in Ukraine , writes  Politico.

A final decision on whether to send the missile has not yet been made, but according to one Biden administration official, the administration is working on the intricate details. These issues include verifying the transfer of sensitive technology and ensuring that Ukrainian aircraft can launch a missile weighing more than a ton, which carries a warhead weighing 450 kilograms. The flight range of JASSM missiles, the transfer of which the US authorities are discussing to Ukraine, is about 400 km.

The official, along with two other people familiar with the internal discussions, were granted anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

The Pentagon declined to comment on whether it had approved the missile transfer.

“We are considering a number of options to meet Ukraine’s security assistance needs, but we do not have any information to provide,” Pentagon spokesman Jeff Jurgensen said.

The debate surrounding the JASSM and the Biden administration’s willingness to consider its transfer make the missile the latest in a long line of sophisticated weapons once considered off-limits for transfer to Ukraine.

  1. “We are considering a number of options to meet Ukraine’s security assistance needs, but we do not have any information to provide,”

This is typical political doublespeak. It can mean just about anything and nothing at all.

    • I can tell you from my own sources Frankie Facts my friend to expect some good news “fairly soon” on long range fires from an unexpected source. If it leaks out early, I can tell you more.

  2. “A final decision on whether to send the missile has not yet been made, … the administration is working on the intricate details. I’m tired of reading this kind of speech. I despair.

    1. It seems insane that the technical resolution to allow this missile transfer is made in the light of a decision. I would have imagined that all possibilities of military aid to Ukraine are monitored in advance to allow better support. Fast support. As usual, we stir things up by dangling solutions that will arrive on Saint-Glinglin’s Day.

    2. Biden’s decisions last for weeks, months, while Ukraine, despite having made a successful incursion into Kursk, suffers and retreats to other places on the front line. Every day without a decision makes Ukraine’s already titanic task more complicated.

    • “Following Politico’s report that the Biden administration is considering the delivery of AGM-158 JASSM air-launched cruise missiles to Ukraine, the US Department of Defense has signed a contract with Lockheed Martin to increase production of JASSM and LRASM missiles.”
