China would try to prevent a Russian attack on Ukraine if it knew about Moscow’s plans. This war does not benefit the PRC.
Chinese Ambassador to the United States Qin Gang wrote about this in an article for the Washington Post .
“Let me state: Claims that China knew, agreed to, or tacitly supported this war are pure disinformation. All these claims serve only the purpose of shifting blame and slinging mud at China,” the ambassador wrote.
He noted that China is the largest trading partner of both Russia and Ukraine, as well as the largest importer of crude oil and natural gas in the world. The ambassador also added that at the time of the invasion, there were more than 6,000 Chinese citizens in Ukraine.
“The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is not good for China. If China had known about the imminent crisis, we would have done everything possible to prevent it,” writes Qin Gang.
The Chinese diplomat also noted that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine, must be respected.
“Regarding Ukraine, China’s position is objective and impartial: it is necessary to fully adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, as well as respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine,” Qin Gang said.
He also urged not to link Taiwan and Ukraine .
“Ukraine is a sovereign state, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory. The issue of Taiwan is China’s internal affair,” the Chinese ambassador to the United States said.
He noted that China stands for peace in Ukraine and is “ready to do everything in our power.”
“Our ultimate goal is to end the war and maintain regional and global stability,” Qin Gang summed up.

I seriously doubt it was just a coincidence that Putin plotted another invasion of Ukraine immediately after the Olympics. I remember the rumor was Putin wanted to go in January when the ground was frozen but the Chinese communists made him wait until after the Olympics.
