The AfD leader carefully avoids saying even one bad word about Russia.

The German right-wing party Alternative for Germany, which has a high chance of taking second place in the parliamentary elections next Sunday, advocates lifting sanctions against Russia, resuming purchases of Russian gas and generally restoring good relations with the aggressor, party leader Alice Weidel said in an interview with Bild .

“We want to have very good relations with our European neighbours (…) But we also want to have very good relations with the great powers. That includes Russia. (…) Until two years ago, we were getting cheap natural gas from Russia through a consortium called Nord Stream. (…) We want to end the sanctions policy, which primarily harms our country. We have the highest energy prices in the world. We are no longer competitive,” she said.

When a journalist pointed out that Russian officials had repeatedly threatened Germany with war, Weidel accused the German government of worsening relations with Moscow.

“We have started a spiral of escalation. There have been verbal, financial and even armed actions against Russia. After World War II, German tanks are again driving against Russia. For three years, German military rhetoric has been directed against Russia. What can we expect here?” she said.

The Bild journalist tried several more times to get Weidel to say at least one critical word about Russia, in particular by directly asking her why she did not condemn the actions of the aggressor.

“Donald Trump doesn’t have that either. You have to sit down at the negotiating table. You have to talk to each other. That’s exactly what we, as the AfD, said: that we have to start peace talks. And I think that’s a serious policy. And above all, we have to put an end to the sanctions policy that is hurting us,” Weidel said.
