30.000 tons of ammunition: with what the Russians successfully repelled the attack of Ukrainian UAVs

On the night of September 18, the city of Toropets in the Tver region of Russia was attacked by drones . Due to a significant fire and detonation, the governor of the region Ihor Rudenia ordered a partial evacuation of the population. Local residents are taken to the neighboring city – Western Dvina. At the same time, the Russian authorities, as usual, did not recognize the destruction of an important object. Instead, the Russian Federation claims that a fire broke out “as a result of the fall of UAV debris.”

According to currently pulsating information in open sources, up to 30,000 tons of ammunition could be stored in the warehouses of the 107th arsenal of the GRAU (Main Artillery Directorate) in the Tver region, mainly 122-mm rockets for multiple rocket launchers (RSZV) and 82-mm mines Exactly how much and what type of ammunition was in storage is not specified. And it is unlikely that such information will appear.

But since for many the figure of thirty thousand tons does not mean anything, I will try to explain – taking into account the nomenclature that was stored at this arsenal.

If we talk about exclusively 122-mm rockets, then this is more than 460 thousand shots.

That is, if we take into account the frequency of use of MLRS in the combat zone, this is a reserve for ten months of active hostilities or more than a year – at medium intensity.

If we talk about only 82-mm mines, then this is 10 million shots. Or, when we take into account the intensity of their use in the combat zone, then this is a reserve for more than a year and a half of active use.

I repeat, I indicated this number not explicitly, but conventionally. Taking into account the fact that only this type of ammunition was in the warehouses.

However, I am sure that other types of ammunition were stored at the arsenal – 152-mm, 122-mm barrel artillery, even anti-aircraft guided missiles are mentioned…

At the same time, you can imagine the scale of losses, even in a mixed type of BC. Well, it won’t be so easy to put out everything that detonates non-stop. I think they will do the same to the arsenal as they did to the oil depots: until everything burns to the ground, they will also watch from afar the flight of ammunition.

Well, in general, the UAV attack was perfectly repelled!

  1. The local authorities claim that the drones that attacked Toropets were “shot down” by the Russian anti-aircraft defense system, and a fire broke out as a result of “falling debris”.
