On Wednesday, January 15, Ukraine returned 25 people from Russian captivity, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced .

“Returning our people home is something that Ukraine is constantly working on. And we will not stop until we return all of our people. Today, another 25 of our people are returning home to Ukraine. These are our military and civilians. Among them are the defenders of Mariupol and Azovstal, as well as our Kharkiv region, Donbass, Zaporizhia, and Kherson region,” he noted.

According to Zelensky, those who returned suffered serious injuries and illnesses:

“Each of them will receive all the necessary medical care.”

Prisoner exchange on January 15 – details

As reported by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, this time Ukraine has achieved a separate format for the return of seriously ill and wounded prisoners.

“All repatriated servicemen are soldiers, sailors and sergeants… Among those returned is also a civilian captured in the Kyiv region and illegally held by Russians. Representatives of the National Guard, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (including the Troops of the Red Army), the Navy, and the State Border Service of Ukraine are returning home and will receive proper treatment and rehabilitation. We were also able to take back wounded Ukrainian servicemen from the Kursk region,” the statement says.

It is noted that the youngest person released is 24 years old, the oldest is 60. 

“These people have been through a lot without proper medical care and with inhumane treatment in hostile captivity. The wounded have lost their sight, amputated limbs, complex bullet wounds and consequences of mine-explosive injuries. Among the diseases are tuberculosis, oncology, gangrene, which eloquently testifies to the conditions in which our people have to live,” the headquarters added.

Let us recall that Ukrainian ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets stated that prisoner exchanges with Russia should become systematic in 2025.
