Macron said he was ready to take a radical step to protect Europe from Russia

Recently, Macron has expressed an increasingly decisive position towards the Russian Federation.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he is ready to discuss the use of French nuclear warheads as part of a “reliable European defense” against threats from the Russian Federation. Politico writes about this .

“I am in favor of opening this discussion, which should include missile defense, long-range shooting, nuclear weapons for those who have them or who have American nuclear weapons on their territory. France will retain its specificity, but is ready to make a greater contribution to the defense of European land,” Macron said in an interview with regional media press group “The Ebra”.

The publication recalled that France, which has about 300 nuclear warheads, is the only nuclear power in the EU.

Politico notes that the French President has recently taken an increasingly tough position towards the Russian Federation due to the fact that the country has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, this is not the first time Macron has announced that he proposes to use France’s nuclear weapons to defend the European Union.

He first mentioned this in 2020, when he called for a “strategic dialogue” on “the role of France’s nuclear deterrence in Europe’s collective security.” Thus, he tried to start a discussion on this issue with Germany, which stationed American nuclear weapons on its territory. France later repeated this position in 2022.

So far, Germany has not responded to Emmanuel Macron’s proposal. However, in January, the leader of the center-right European People’s Party (EPP) and member of the Bavarian CSU party, Manfred Weber, told Politico that Europe should “accept Macron’s proposal” because of the creation of a “European dimension of nuclear defense as a long-term goal.”

Deployment of nuclear weapons in European countries

Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that his country is ready to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory if necessary. He emphasized that he had already talked about this with the United States.

“I do not hide the fact that when I was asked about this, I declared our readiness. Russia is increasingly militarizing the Königsberg area. It recently moved its nuclear weapons to Belarus. If there is such a decision by our allies, to place nuclear weapons as part of a nuclear exchange and on their territory in order to strengthen the security of NATO’s eastern flank, we are ready for this,” Duda assured.

It is known that the Russian Federation has moved tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus , closer to NATO member countries. Thus, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is threatening a wider military confrontation with the Alliance over support for Ukraine.

    • Caution is needed here:
He has switched from being a putler appeaser; to put it politely, to tough talking.
But so far it’s come to nothing.
He “doesn’t rule out” French troops on the ground. Even mentioned sending 3 divisions. But then went quiet.
Now he talks in vague terms about :
“strategic dialogue” on “the role of France’s nuclear deterrence in Europe’s collective security.”….. which means approximately nothing.
He has invited putinaZi athletes to his Olympics this summer on the pretext of them being “neutral.” Bullshit!
But his actual contribution to Ukraine is about one third of the European country with similar economic and military power; the UK.

  1. If Macron was so serious about defending Europe, why hasn’t he sent more material to Ukraine? After all, Ukraine is currently the only country that is destroying the continent’s only enemy.

  2. to try to answer, first of all France does not keep old equipment, nor did it have Soviet equipment like others. she has a small army that knows how to do everything and pay the price of blood – but small. When we gave the Caesar cannons it immediately represented 25% of our artillery. there is also what is not seen or what is not said such as intelligence or certain materials… we must be able to say that France retains its power of deterrence and enough to meet its NATO commitments, number of tanks, planes…. I understand that England in terms of aviation can no longer meet its NATO commitments in terms of the number of planes. maybe she feels more coupled/backed to the USA? why did England wait until the 61 billion dollar program was voted on before itself making a significant announcement of sending arms? otherwise I do not know the debt of England, nor the possibilities of its military industry to draw further conclusions.

for nuclear deterrence… to make it short a certain public vagueness is required…. 😉
Simply if we think about it a little, France’s vital interests have a European dimension…
Furthermore, as Trump said, between the USA and the EU there is an ocean…
In some cases it may make a difference…

(I spoke without animosity without any desire to denigrate)
