Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday said he plans to punish officials responsible for setting up ammunition depots in a town outside Kiev that were blown up in a Russian missile attack.
Zelensky, addressing Ukrainians in his nightly video address, stressed that it had been explicitly forbidden to set up depots in the town of Vyshneve, “yet all these regulations were ignored.”
He noted that there were plenty of locations in Ukraine where munitions depots could be set up at a safe distance from residential buildings.
Zelensky said investigations have been launched against the heads of two state-owned enterprises as well as other managers.
Russia launched a major air attack in the early hours of July 6, pummelling Ukraine with missiles, drones and cruise missiles.
The strikes targeted Kiev as well as Vyshneve, located to the west of the capital.
Nine people were killed and dozens injured in the attacks on Vyshneve, according to local authorities.
Security forces evacuated hundreds of people in the town due to secondary explosions, pointing to a strike on an ammunition depot.
It took days for firefighters to extinguish the flames.
