Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss ways to achieve peace in Ukraine, according to Zelenskyy’s Telegram post on Aug. 9.

“I’m grateful for the support. We share the same understanding of the need for a truly lasting peace for Ukraine, and the danger of Russia’s plan to reduce everything to discussing the impossible. Clear steps are needed, along with maximum coordination with our partners,” Zelenskyy said.

The president also stressed the commitment of Britain, the United States and other allies to ending the war.

“We are actively working for constructive diplomacy and to ensure decisions can work. We agreed on the next contacts,” he said.

Zelenskyy also held talks with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal. During the conversation, he informed the Estonian leader about Ukraine’s diplomatic work with partners aimed at ending the war and ensuring shared security.

“We share the view that security decisions for Ukraine matter for everyone in Europe,” the president said.

Zelenskyy discussed European Union issues, including the situation surrounding Ukraine’s EU accession talks. He underscored the importance of Estonia’s principled stance in ensuring fair conditions for Ukraine’s and Moldova’s entry, stressing there “can be no divisions or injustice along this path.”

“Unity must work,” Zelenskyy concluded, thanking Estonia for its support and cooperation.

On Aug. 8, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that Vladimir Putin is demanding Kyiv hand over the entire Donbas and Crimea to the Kremlin. The United States is currently trying to secure agreement from Ukraine and its European allies on those demands ahead of the dictator’s meeting with Donald Trump, set for Aug. 15 in Alaska.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that Putin is offering to halt fighting in Ukraine in exchange for control over the Donbas.

Trump has confirmed that his plan to end the war in Ukraine envisions a territorial swap under which Kyiv would regain part of its land but be forced to give up other areas.

CBS News later reported that the Ukrainian president is likely to “in some way” take part in the Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska.

Zelenskyy, for his part, said any decisions made without Ukraine “will be directed against peace.”

He stressed that territorial integrity is enshrined in Ukraine’s constitution and “no one will or can retreat from this,” adding that Ukrainians will not give away their land to the occupiers or reward Russia for the war.

  1. I wonder what Zelensky would really like to say to TACO? I’m sure he wouldn’t be thanking TACO for committment.
