The President considers a retreat from Donetsk region an irresponsible step due to the presence of fortifications. The urbanized areas of the region are more reliable than new defensive lines.
“The withdrawal of troops from Donbas would be a strategic defeat for Ukraine.”, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this on the air of the telethon, reports UNN.
According to him, currently the Defense Forces maintain a presence not only in Donetsk region, but also in part of Luhansk region, and in case of withdrawal from Donbas, Ukraine will become weaker, as fortifications have been built in the region.
“And when you are given a signal, for example, by our American partners, well, you can build new structures. You can. It takes time. And for what? They are ready to give money. And why should we do this? An urbanized zone is still stronger than any lines you build in the field.”
He emphasized that the withdrawal of the Armed Forces from the territory of Donetsk region and a small part of Luhansk region would be an “irresponsible” step.
“200.000 people who live there… The question is that we are taking a step back, morally weakening our army, the question is how many people have already died there. I believe that this step today is irresponsible,” Zelenskyy summarized.
According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, Russia plans to involve 20,000 reservists for an offensive in the southeast. The enemy’s goal is the complete occupation of Donetsk and Luhansk regions by autumn.
