Zelensky’s abrupt refusal to ‘swap territories’ could anger Trump, – NYT

The US President has made a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia one of his top foreign policy goals.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly rejected US President Donald Trump’s suggestion that a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia could include “an exchange of some territories.”

But Zelensky’s outright refusal risks angering Trump, who has made concluding a peace treaty between Ukraine and Russia one of the key goals of his foreign policy, even if it means accepting terms unfavorable to Kiev, The New York Times writes .

The issue of territories in the context of a peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine

Trump has previously criticized Ukraine for what he called its clinging to overly harsh ceasefire demands and its “unreadiness for peace.” Now the American leader has said that “some of the territory will have to be swapped and returned.”

“There will be an exchange of territories for the benefit of both sides,” he stressed.

Zelensky’s position, in turn, reflects the widespread opinion in Ukraine that it is unacceptable to surrender territories for the sake of ending the war, the media writes. According to a recent poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, just over half of Ukrainians believe that “under no circumstances” should the country cede land, “even if it prolongs the war and threatens the preservation of independence.”

But support for territorial concessions has grown since Ukraine’s failed counteroffensive in 2023 showed that it is impossible to regain significant territory. Some 38% of the population now believes such a move is acceptable, up from just 10% two years ago.

However, Trump’s proposal, which does not specify which territories could be exchanged, has touched a nerve with many Ukrainians.

Other news about the “territorial issue”

UNIAN reported earlier that Putin was allegedly ready to agree to a complete ceasefire, but only if Ukraine completely surrenders the Luhansk and Donetsk regions to Russia. European officials, in turn, expressed serious concerns about this proposal.

In addition, in his publication on Telegram, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that this “exchange of territories” will never happen , as it would contradict the Constitution of Ukraine.

The arrogance of this statement is unbelievable. Who the fuck does this piece of crap think he is? Ukraine would sooner die fighting than give in to this treacherous, evil bastard.

  2. Despite all inflammatory comments here on, i myself consider a good deal a way out. I mean Zelenskyy already admitted that Ukraine cannot retake the occupied territories by military force. If the ruSSians will leave Zaporizhia completely and also leave Kharkiv alone i may support this deal. BUT, the real question remains what military shield by NATO/US will Ukraine get to make sure Putin won’t make up some shit later on, accusing Ukraine of breaching the deal and after being armed to the teeth, attack again to come for the rest. This is the most important question of all. Without NATO/US protection ANY deal is WORTHLESS.

    • And if we had a functional government and justice system, taco would already be in prison as Bubba and Juan’s bitch.
